Paul Zaza’s score for My Bloody Valentine occupies a singular place in early-’80s horror, admired for how effectively it balances restraint and atmosphere against moments of raw, industrial unease. Breaking the mold of the typical scores of the era, Zaza leans heavily into droning textures, echoing orchestrations, and minimalist motifs that mirror the film’s claustrophobic, subterranean setting. Rather than announcing the scares, the score creeps and lingers, amplifying the film’s sense of isolation and dread. In doing so, Zaza crafted a soundscape that quietly distinguished My Bloody Valentine from its contemporaries, one that horror fans continue to appreciate for its subtlety, discipline, and unnerving effectiveness.
My Bloody Valentine tells the story of a small mining town haunted by the legend of Harry Warden, a miner who survived a cave-in and was believed to have returned years later to commit a series of murders. When the town prepares to celebrate Valentine’s Day for the first time since the tragedy, new killings erupt at the hands of a figure in mining gear wielding a pickaxe. As suspicion spreads among friends connected to the original disaster, long-buried secrets surface. Originally released as a heavily cut slasher in 1981, My Bloody Valentine has since graduated from cult status—known for its bleak atmosphere and distinctive blue-collar setting—to full acceptance as a holiday classic.
Terror Vision Records located the original master tapes from Paul Zaza’s expansive archive to create the most complete listening experience ever released of this landmark score on cassette. This edition includes the entire score as heard in the film—every cue, every song, and additional extras—totaling 1 hour and 52 minutes of music, with over 45 minutes previously unreleased. This is the definitive version fans have been waiting for!
